Das Golden Gate Quartet gehört
zu den bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten Interpreten
der Gospelmusik. Das Golden Gate Quartet wurde
1934 in Norfolk (Virginia) als Golden Gate Jubilee
Singers gegründet; seinen heutigen Namen
trägt es seit 1941. Während des Zweiten
Weltkriegs hielt die Popularität der Gruppe
unvermindert an, wozu auch Kriegslieder wie Stalin
Wasn't Stalling beitrugen. In dieser Zeit trat
sie auch in mehreren Hollywoodfilmen auf, etwa
in Star Spangled Rhythm, Hitparade, Hollywood
Canteen und Bring On the Girls.
The Golden Gate Quartet is the most successful
of all of the African-American gospel music groups
who sang in the jubilee quartet style. Founded
as the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet in Norfolk,
Virginia in 1934 by A. C. 'Eddie' Griffin, Robert
'Peg' Ford, Henry Owens, and Bill Johnson, they
began as a traditional jubilee quartet, combining
the clever arrangements associated with barbershop
quartets with rhythms borrowed from the blues
and jazz.
